Stacker recently compiled a list of the 10 best school districts in the commonwealth using rankings from Niche, which assessed school districts on a variety of criteria such as academics, teacher salaries, expenses per student and access to extracurricular activities.
For many families, where they put down their roots will ultimately affect which school district their children will attend, making it a key decision when buying a home, a luxury not every family is able to afford — particularly amid a highly competitive housing market, Stacker noted.
It added that oftentimes a proxy for the quality of education in a school district is how much it spends per student, with several studies suggesting that increased spending per student correlates with higher academic achievement, particularly in areas with predominantly low-income students, Stacker said.
Public schools are often funded largely through property taxes, giving disproportionate benefits to higher-income towns and cities compared to low-income areas which suffer from lack of funding for critical expenditures such as salaries and benefits, instructional resources and support services, Stacker said.
