SUSI for Young Women Leaders is carried out annually to honour the legacy of Secretary Madeleine K. Albright. Secretary Albright served as the first female United States Secretary of State. She served from January 1997 to January 2001.

Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI) for young women leaders are intensive short-term academic programs. This program is solely for female undergraduates aged 18 to 25. The program is meant for females who are interested in:
- Learning about women’s leadership and roles in society.
- Developing their advocacy skills.
This program consists of a four-week academic residency with a series of:
- Readings,
- Seminar discussions,
- Group presentations, and
- Lectures.
Cultural activities, community service, site visits, and leadership development complement SUSI for young women leaders’ coursework and academic sessions. A one-week study tour in the United States is included.
Purpose of SUSI for Young Women Leaders
The purpose of this program is to give groups of undergraduate student leaders a deep understanding of the United States while improving their leadership skills.
The SUSI for Young Women Leaders program improves participants’ knowledge of United States democratic principles and society, values, institutions, and culture. This program improves leadership skills in areas like communication, management, decision-making, and critical thinking.
SUSI for women leaders main focus is on:
- The history and participation of women in public life in the United States of America.
- Development of leadership skills (like management, decision-making, critical thinking, and communication).
- Leadership skills in the context of women’s participation in U.S. politics, culture, society, and economy.
- Participants utilise the knowledge gained during the program to start projects in their home communities.

SUSI for Young Women Leaders 2024 will be hosted by Green River College in Auburn, Washington, United States of America.
The theme for SUSI for Women Leaders
The theme of the SUSI 2024 program for Central Asian countries is “Environmental Issues.” This institute will discuss topics like:
- Climate change
- Clean energy
- Ocean protection
- Sustainable development
- Conservation
- Water access
- Climate entrepreneurship
- Sustainable agricultural practices
- Public health
- Environmental justice
- Pollution
- Ecotourism
- Impact of climate change on youth, minority populations and communities, including women.
However, a specific component of the SUSI program may include fieldwork in the Duwamish River. You will learn and discuss about the local environmental issues, socio-economic impacts of climate change, and community service at the Auburn Food Bank. Also, you will meet with Justice Mary Yu, the Washington State Supreme Court Judge.
SUSI Program Dates
The SUSI program will start on 21st June 2024 and end on 26th July 2024. If any changes are made to the start and end date for the SUSI program, the selected candidates will be informed. Also, if health, travel, and safety conditions become a challenge, the program will be changed into a virtual format.

Requirements for SUSI for Young Women Leaders 2024
Participants must be either first, second, or third-year undergraduate students from universities, colleges, and other higher levels of education.
Participants must show leadership through extracurricular activities, community involvement, and academic work.
Also, participants’ areas of study should include either social sciences, humanities, education, business, sciences, and other professional areas.
However, participants must:
- Be a female.
- Be a full-time student of one of the local colleges/universities of Kazakhstan.
- Show proficiency in English Language via reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
- Be a citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
- Be between the ages of 18 and 25.
- Show excellent leadership qualities and potential in their community activities and university.
- Have one semester left of their undergraduate studies.
- Show interest in learning about the United States of America.
- Be mature, independent, responsible, tolerant, inquisitive, open-minded, and confident.
- Show interest in environmental topics and other related topics.
- Have little or no study or travel experience in the United States or any other state outside their home country.
- Have a high level of academic achievement. This level will be accessed through awards, grades, and teacher recommendations.
- Be comfortable with campus life and be prepared to share living accommodations.
- Be able to adapt to different social and cultural practices.
- Be willing and able to fully participate in the academic program, educational travel, and community service.
