What exactly is a Unity school
The first mention of the term ‘unity school’ in Nigeria dates back to the 1966. That year, three unity schools, or Federal Government colleges were established. Those were the colleges in Okposi (Eastern region), Sokoto (Northern region) and Warri (Midwestern region).
As the country struggled with the idea of unity, the purpose of these schools was to connect children from different regions. This way, kids could communicate with their peers from all over the country and foster their feeling of national identity. Federal unity schools offered the best facilities, the most qualified teachers and the greatest education any secondary school student could have dreamed of.
Today, that small number grew to an impressive 104 Federal Government colleges. Continue reading to find out, which ones were named the best of the best.
Unity schools in Nigeria
As we mentioned before, there are 104 unity schools/Federal Government colleges in Nigeria in 2017. Each region of the country has enough unity schools to choose from.

However, the name ‘unity school’ does not mean what it used to mean before. For example, not all Federal Government colleges offer the same high quality of education.
Some are, quite frankly, below average.

List of Best Federal Unity Schools in Nigeria (TOP 10)
Below you can find a list of unity schools in Nigeria that have proven to be the best in the country. The school’s position on this list was determined by the results of secondary school exams by West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in 2014/2015.
Unfortunately, we don’t have more recent data.

10. Federal Government Girls’ College, Efon-Alaaye, Ekiti State
9.  Federal Government College, Ikole-Ekiti, Ekiti State
8. Federal Government College, Okposi, Ebonyi State

In these ten colleges, 90 or more percent of students scored credit or above in Maths and English. The winner, FGGC Benin City, earned the impressive 99.14%.

Apart from being judged based on the WAEC results, all of the colleges were rated based on the results of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), National Examination Council (NECO), National Business Certificate (NBC), National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and National Technical Examination (NTC).
In the category of BECE/NECO, the best performing schools were:

2. Federal Science and Technical College, Awka, Anambra State
3. Federal Government College, Nise, Anambra State
In the SSCE/NECO, the top schools were:
1. Federal Government College, Nise, Anambra State
2. Federal Government Girls’ College, Gwandu, Kebbi State
3. Federal Government College, Rubochi, FCT-Abuja
And last, but not least, in the category of NBC/NTC/NABTEB, these schools earned the top positions:
1.Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, Lagos State
2. Federal Science and Technical College, Ijebu-Mushin, Ogun State
3. Federal Science and Technical College, Awka, Anambra State
